Women helped by Anpumanai

Anpumanai provides temporary accommodation for women in dire circumstances. As such two women who have got the assistance of Anpumanai are described here.

One of them came with her three year old son to Kilinochchi, prior to August 2006, while she was pregnant. When the A9 route was closed she was unable to take the arduous journey back by ship to Jaffna in her condition. She came to Anpumanai. She gave birth to her child while at Anpumanai.

When the mother and baby were in stable condition they managed to take the journey to Jaffna by ship. She has contacted Anpumanai by letter on many occasions expressing gratitude for the assistance rendered by Anpumanai.

Another woman became pregnant while unmarried. The man refused to accept responsibility and her parents also refused to have her at their home fearing stigma in the society. Anpumanai took care of her and she gave birth to the baby while under Anpumanai care.

In the meantime Anpumanai staff have counseled the parents to accept their daughter and grandchild and gave them the strength to fight the social stigma. Presently she is with her parents.

In the meantime a court case is on going against the man who refused to accept responsibility for the pregnancy.
