Malarcholai income generation activities

  [CWDR - 23 December 2007]

Several small scale income generation activities have been launched for the women at Malarcholai.

These include supplying the florists, selling nursery plants, taking orders for tailoring; and packing home made snacks.

Flower garlands are extensively used in the Tamil community for temples and cultural functions. The women at Malarcholai will make these garlands and supply it to the florists for sale.

Women also tend nursery plants of fruiting trees for sale. These are in good demand.

Home made equivalents of potato chips are very popular among children. The women make them and package them for supply to the shops.

Women received training in all of these activities from experts in the field. Some of the women were able to gain salaried employment with the skills they thus received.  They continue to reside at Malarcholai and able to save what they earn for the future education of their children.
