Nine civilians killed and four injured in Sri Lankan military claymore attack
The onslaught by the Sri Lankan military, confirmed by its own media statement today, is forcing the civilians to flee since this morning. A claymore was exploded among the fleeing civilians by Deep Penetration Unit of the Sri Lankan military. The attack took place at around 8.45am this morning in the Musali area on a vehicle taking fleeing civilians while the vehicle was traveling from Kokkupidiyan to Mullikulam in LTTE area.
The vehicle was carrying 13 civilians from three families. Available details of the victims are listed below. One injured person was taken to Silavathurai hospital and died in the hospital. At the time of reporting, the other eight bodies remain where the attack took place. Families are too frightened to go to the location to recover the bodies. Based on the request from the families LTTE officials from both Mannar and Kilinochchi have requested the repective ICRC branches for help to recover the bodies. The injured civilians have been taken to Murunkan hospital and the Mannar hospital. Six thousand people trying to flee from the advancing SLA from Arippu through Nanaddan to enter the LTTE area has been stopped by the Sri Lankan military that is now present in the Arippu road. The claymore attack and the blocking of the fleeing civilians are done deliberately to intimidate the civilians from fleeing to LTTE areas. Details of victims 1. Mrs Janes (female, aged 32)
