On 19 and 20 January, all day shelling from Udayarkaddu to Thevipuram in the Mullaithivu District caused extensive civilian deaths and injuries. At least 17 civilians were killed and more than 50 civilians were injured over the two days. Among those injured were scores o children, old people and women.


Hospitals with much reduced facilities are struggling to cope with the injured. Absence of medical staff due to continuous displacement is worsening the situation. Doctors have called for volunteers to help in nursing the injured.
